Bosnian War Identification Cards:

Covering the War in Bosnia presented logistical nightmares for journalists required to travel throughout the country. Besides needing armored vehicles with access to unusually scarce fuel supplies, crews also needed permission to cross the many checkpoints separating the areas of conflict.

Each side had individual identification cards, including one for the United Nations. The U.N. cards were used for press briefings and access to relief flights to and from Sarajevo. The Sarajevo television station also required I.D.s to get access to work spaces and a satellite feed point. Special identification was issued for Pope John Paul II’s visit to the city. Most of the cards had to be updated on a regular basis.

These are a few examples of the identification cards used from 1992-95.
