In the 1990s military conflicts were a common occurrence around the globe. Despite the inherent danger, CNN dispatched field crews to cover the conflicts. During the War in Croatia, over two dozen journalist were killed in three years of combat. When the conflict spread to Bosnia, CNN, along with other media outlets, began to investigate and procure protective gear for their journalists. Initially, typical equipment included protective vests and helmets, along with armored vehicles. During later conflicts, when new threats arose, gas masks were added. CNN selected the highest rated Kevlar vests with ceramic plate inserts and Kevlar helmets. It also ordered top-of-the-line protective masks.
