Description
She had been hinting about running as early as October of 2002. It was an online announcement published on Clinton’s website. The candidate waited a week to make her first campaign trip, and it was to Iowa, the site of the first caucuses in the nation.
The senator from New York chose East High School in Des Moines as her first venue. The gymnasium was packed with an estimated 2800 Iowan’s and several hundred members of the national media. Sen. Clinton began her campaign with the slogan “Let the Conversation Begin”. It was on banners around the hall and on a placard attached to a table next to where the former First Lady was sitting.
The townhall style meeting included the standard political topics such as health care, education, trade agreements, energy policy and the war in Iraq. The topic of electing a woman as president also was covered by the newly declared candidate. She received a very warm reception from the overflow crowd.
When the event was over, I had to stick around to do live shots. As always, the folks putting on the rally started to break down the event site. With the risers being dismantled and the signage disappearing, the background of my shot was not ideal. I did, however, notice the placard from the main set was discarded on the ground. Before it could be tossed, I retrieved it and set it next to my live shot location. We were the last to leave the site so I kept the sign for the collection.
I also collected two other items from the announcement:
- Press credential from Sen. Hillary Clinton’s “Let the Conversation Begin” announcement in Des Moines, Iowa January 27, 2007.
- Hillary Clinton “I’m in to Win” pinback from first official campaign trip to Iowa, January 27, 2007.
