NY Post Kerry VP Mistake

In a front page gaffe, the New York Post wrongly proclaimed Rep. Dick Gephardt would be Sen. John Kerry’s running mate for the 2004 presidential race. It brought back memories of the 1948 newspaper headlines that declared New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey had defeated President Harry S. Truman.

Description

The Post claimed an “exclusive”, but proved inaccurate when Sen. Kerry selected North Carolina Sen. John Edwards for the position.

In hindsight, many pollsters and political consultants have speculated that choosing Gephardt might have been the wiser choice. Edwards was selected to help deliver the South and it was also felt he would have an easy time with Dick Cheney during the vice-presidential debates. Edwards wasn’t as successful at either task as Kerry had hoped. In interviews conducted years after the campaign, the former U.S. Secretary of State admitted he made a mistake by selecting Edwards. He felt that John Edwards disappeared from the campaign.
